This Gender Studies Now Series event brings Grace Lavery, Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Her first scholarly monograph, Quaint, Exquisite: Victorian Aesthetics and the Idea of Japan, won the North American Victorian Studies' "Book of the Year" award in 2019; her second, Pleasure and Efficacy: Techniques of the Sex Change from George Eliot to Buffalo Bill, is forthcoming in 2022. She has also published creative work in queer and trans studies for broader readerships, including a memoir entitled Please Miss: A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Penis, and she is currently writing a novel provisionally entitled The Constitution. She is a former general editor of Transgender Studies Quarterly, and she lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband Daniel and two Japanese Chins, Bon Bon and Gogo.
