Everybody’s Protest Music: On Sentimentality and the Anti-Solidarity Politics of Hip-Hop Culture

Thursday, February 12, -
Speaker(s): Dr. Antonia Maria Randolph (UNC-Chapel Hill)
What happens if we link hip-hop's standing as protest music to its misogynoir, or antiblack sexism towards Black women? Dr. Randolph argues that hip-hop's misogynoir, often taken to undermine its credibility as a form of protest music, is political speech meant to distinguish legitimate political suffering (i.e. state violence against Black men) from illegitimate claims to political suffering (i.e. misogynoir).
