SOUTH AFRICA: PAST AND FUTURE

This course will explore the history of modern South Africa, from the beginning of the mineral revolution in the 1860s to the post-apartheid present. We will cover such topics as mining-centered industrialization, the transformation of the countryside, the emergence of Afrikaner and African nationalism, segregationist ideology, the construction of apartheid, the liberation movements, the establishment and promises of multi-party democracy, the AIDS epidemic, as well as re-emergence of social movements in the contemporary period. We will further consider the place of South Africa as a regional, continental, and indeed world power. Instructor: Shapiro
