A commemorative gesture, "Elegy" calls together a group of female vocalperformers, who collectively enact a ritual of mourning. The durationalperformance sustains a sung cry-evoking the presence of an absentindividual. Responding to situations of extreme violence perpetratedagainst women, as well as trans and non-binary people in South Africa, each performance of "Elegy" recalls the identity of individuals whosesubjectivities have been fundamentally violated-questioning the all-tooeasyconsignments of a generic, all-encompassing victimhood.
